Recording Equipment - History

DPA4061 (x2) > HEB Batt Box > Sony PCM-M1

Taper: Javi D.

Location: row 2 from the barrier, in front of the right speakers

Transfer: DAT Master 48KHz > optical transfer to WAV > Cooledit Pro WAV edit (convert to 32bit 44.1KHz at 999 quality, normalization(*), convert to 16 bit w/triangular dither 1bit) > FLAC

(*) At the time of the recording, the levels were set too high and there was a bit of clipping in the first few songs. During Electric Co the volume was lowered several times, and then during New Years Day it was increased a bit. All these volume fluctuations were corrected as carefully as possible. Also, the right channel was increased +1.3dB to get a balanced image.

Additional notes (by Javi D.): No EQ was performed in order to preserve the sound of the original DAT tape. Some may find it a bit bassy. Bass reduction or listening through headphones is recommended. In my opinion, anything done with DPA4061's almost always needs some bass reduction, and this is no exception.

Comments

A powerful recording with all instruments well captured. This is the first tape of Javi D.'s trilogy (he also taped Madrid and Lisbon with the same gear and on the same taping location). Clarity is excellent, just a bit bassy, as no remastering was performed. A bit of crowd noise is audible here and there, but never becoming too distracting. However, both music and vocals come through pretty strong and clean. A real upgrade to other sources in circulation, as sound quality is fantastic in this one.

A really excited atmosphere during the first of three shows in Spain. Both band and crowd were in high spirits, so the live feeling was fantastic. Note Larry messed up during Elevation. Usual snippets appeared here and there, and Bono and crowd sang 'happy birthday' to The Edge right before Still Haven't Found. As it was the day before Edge's birthday, Bono present the guitarist with a t-shirt of the local football team, FC Barcelona. Finally, The Edge wore it while playing Party Girl.
