Recording Equipment - History
DPA4061 (x2) > HEB Batt Box > Sony PCM-M1
Taper: Javi D.
Location: row 1 from the barrier, in front of the right speakers
Transfer: DAT Master 48KHz > optical transfer to WAV > Cooledit Pro WAV edit (convert to 32bit 44.1KHz at 999 quality, normalization(*), convert to 16 bit w/triangular dither 1bit) > FLAC
(*) I had to increase the volume +4dB in the first three tracks because they were lower than the rest of the show. Also, I increased the left channel +1.3dB to balance both channels. Finally, I performed hard limiting +2dB to maximize the volume without introducing clipping.
Additional notes (by Javi D.): No EQ whatsoever, just some volume normalization, so this is essentially the raw DAT. Some bass reduction is recommended for listening... just perform the bass reduction you like for your ears. In my opinion, anything done with DPA4061's almost always needs some bass reduction, and this is no exception.
Comments
Awesome recording for the third and last show in Spain. This is the second tape of Javi D.'s trilogy (he also taped Barcelona and Lisbon with the same gear and on the same taping location). Again, clarity is excellent, although the recording is rather bassy, as no remastering was performed. Crowd noise is minimal, softly located between songs. Music and vocals come through pretty strong and clean, as Javi D. described his taping location like "cleanest, strongest sound, and quiet people". A real upgrade to other sources in circulation, as sound quality is amazing in this one.
The show was excellent with the audience in high spirits, adding a hot live feeling. I attended the show, and I've never seen Bono so "into the concert". Even Bono mentioned right before Miracle Drug that back in Madrid, in 1987, with the show played during the Joshua Tree tour, he had the feeling it was being an incredible night, and he was having that feeling again. So, with this great atmosphere, the band delivered a fantastic show, although they ran into the standard setlist. Spanish Eyes was printed on the original setlist, and finally the band (I'd say Edge) decided to perform Yahweh. After All Because of You, Larry was quiet behind the drum kit, waiting for the band to begin with the old b-side, but Edge took the acoustic guitar. During The Electric Co. Bono's mic malfunctioned, and the singer began to hit it against the sound system, until some roadie came onstage to bring a new one. Another curiosity can be heard at 03:56 aprox in New Year's Day, when Larry Mullen loses a drum stick. The highlight of the show, for the city's memory, occurs when Bono dedicates Miss Sarajevo to the families, friends and victims of the bombings, especially Madrid's ones, back in March 11th 2004.
