Very solid recording for the first night in Auckland. The sound is good, with all instruments coming through pretty well. Overall recording sounds very close. It lacks just a bit more of sharpness and overall definition, and at times recording is slightly muffled. Audience noise is audible, but not an issue. Bono made a reference to One Tree Hill in some point of the concert.
There are a few drawbacks. For example, The Electric Co cuts out abruptly at 03:59, missing a good portion of the song. I'd say from this point, the tape runs slightly fast. New Year's Day contains a skip at 02:24 that also cuts off a pair of seconds.
After all this, I have to say that finally we have a true recording of Auckland 01-September-1984. There have been a lot of fakes in the trading market, with some recordings that pretended to be this show, but they just were tapes from Wellington 31-August-1984. Of course, there are a lot of differences between both shows (although they have identical setlist). If you can have a significative one, just listen to the end of New Year's Day. After the song in Wellington, Bono tells the audience he was having problems with the microphone, and someone called Steve comes onstage to change it. It does not happen in this recording from Auckland. This show was transferred from cassette to digital format by Dana Fletcher, and she also mentions that "many people including myself have received the 31st show mislabled as the first. This one is the correct September-1-1984".
