Recording Equipment - History
Sony WA-55 stereo cassette-corder + 2x Ssony ECM-16T clip-on mics > Analog Master
Taper: Chris (aka searcher2cr)
Location: End Blue Section 28, Row C, Seat 18
Transfer: Cassette Master > Sony TC-RX410 cassette player > MacBook Pro > CD Spin Doctor 3.0.2t > xAct 1.5 (for FLAC conversion / sector boundary check / md5 checksums & flac fingerprint) > FLAC
Additional comments (by searcher2cr): Note that during the first half of the concert, up until about 2/3 into "Bad", one of my mics was not fully plugged into the stereo splitter adapter that plugged into my WA-55 deck. I didn't realize the problem until that point in the concert and thus was unknowingly only recording one channel. Thus I split that channel to at least give a mono signal in both left and right channels. You'll notice a nice shift to stereo during the climax of "Bad" when I checked my mics and got them both plugged in properly. Stereo starts at 6:20 of track.
Comments
Coming from the master cassette, this recording features pretty good clarity and sharpness. Music comes through powerful, strong. Audience is audible, but not really overwhelming and add a nice live feeling. The show is quite enjoyable, and the band put on a fantastic gig, in my opinion, with extended renditions of Bad (full of snippets) and Knockin' On Heaven's Door (with a guy from the audience onstage that really played great).
I checked Dana Fletcher's transfer from a second generation cassette and this master offered by 'searcher2cr', and they both are exactly the same source. So this recording represents a good upgrade, as it is straight off the master cassette. Moreover, Dana received the second gen cassette from a guy nicknamed AW, who stated the next: "I have a show here from 3-28-85 Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto, it's a 2nd gen tape with unknown mics: sort of binaural/clip-on mic. All I remember from the guy was that he and his friends taped it in a way to 'get the best stereo effect, by having two friends to the far left and far right each holding one of two mics'. Appearantly 1 of them wasn't clicked in properly so the full stereo effect kicks in halfway through Bad". This matches with 'searcher2cr' comments mentioned above. Finally, note this master offers the complete concert, including Gloria, as Dana's tape was missing that song.
A noticeable edit occurs after Wire, with no loss of music. Another edit happens before Pride, but it just affects to crowd noise. The last edit is placed during the last encore break, right after Gloria. Bad contains a little dropout at 06:20 as explained above by the taper, as he got the mics plugged in properly at that point.
