Comments
Very good sound quality in this recording that comes off second generation cassettes. It places in the borderline 'very good / excellent' rating. Music and vocals sound pretty clear and powerful, just somewhat harsh. There's certainly some crowd noise, but nothing too distracting. Note there are little ticks between some of the tracks, mostly on CD1.
This is a pretty famous concert due to Bono ordering 10.000 pizzas for the crowd. Quoting book U2-Live by Pimm Jal de la Parra and Caroline van Oosten de Boer (published in 2003 by Omnibus Press):
When switching channels after Even Better than the Real Thing, Bono stops at a pizza advertisement and turns to the audience: "You want some pizza?" While the crowd roar, he picks up the phone and dials the number on the screen. "Hello? Is this Speedy Pizza? I'd like to order 10.000 pizzas for Detroit. We're at the Palace, you know the Palace? Yeah, I am serious, I'm very serious. You can't make 10.000? Just make as many as you can, OK? What? My name is Bono...".
As they wait for the encore, the crowd are confused when three men in blue uniforms wheel in a large cart, but cheer as one of the video screens zooms in to reveal what is on the cart: pizza. The crowd chant "Piz-za, piz-za" while a hundred pizza boxes are flung like frisbees to those within reach, leaving the crowd exhilarated and well-fed.
During the concert that took place in this same venue but on May 30th 2001 (during the first lef of the Elevation Tour), Bono did a reference to this show: "Somebody here owes me a pizza".
The phone call is perfectly audible on 'track 4 CD1'. However, the pizza delivering is not, as it seems the encore break after Still Haven't Found wasn't recorded. With or Without You and Love is Blindness sound different than the rest of the show, as they were taken from a higher generation cassette.
