Transfer and Remaster: Yauckt

Additional comments (by Yauckt): This is an enhanced version of the previous version torrented on U2T. It desesperatly lacked of body. It's still not a perfect sounding gig but it sounds now pretty solid (now bass and drums exists) and worth the download as it's a very interesting concert. Indexing is different than the previous version. I don't have the old version anymore so I can't provide a before/after sample. It probably contains the exact same minors as the previous version but it may be possible that I restored some of them.

Comments

Very good sound quality in this remastered version of the original (but UDG) recording (no lineage provided) of the so-called 'Outside Broadcast Dress Rehearsal'. The output has now been enhanced by 'Yauckt', and it sounds pretty clear and deeper than the original recording, but I wouldn't say it is perfectly clean, being somewhat raw and muddy. Audience noise is really audible with some screaming and cheering near the taper, and conversations as well. Soft popping occurs in the background here and there.

There is an edit between Even Better and Mysterious Ways. Moreover, Mysterious Ways contains some "peaks" in volume (0:26 and 0:45). Another edit happens before Unchained Melody, that cuts out the first seconds of the tune. Track 12 (first take of Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses) sounds really out of synch between band and sequencer, so Bono starts it anew acoustically (track 13). Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World fades in during the sequencer intro. One more edit occurs before Running to Stand Still, that kills some seconds of the beginning of the song. This song fades out near the end, and then, next song, Where the Streets Have No Name, fades in. Pride fades out, and Desire cuts in during its intro, omitting the ZooTV intermission. Finally, Love is Blindness fades out during the solo, lasting 04:35.

Notes

(u2tours.com): Dress rehearsal for 'Outside Broadcast' tour - $15 admission, proceeds donated to 5 charities.

(Justin Burke @ u2tours.com): The concert did sell out eventually and after enduring a local Hershey band that warmed-up U2 took the stage and ran through some "oldies" to warm themselves up. It was such a treat to see them informal and relaxed. They performance itself was loose, but inspired, Bono and the Edge working the wings and catwalks. My favorite moment was the improptu acoustic performance of Whos Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses. Bono took the stage with guitar in hand and the sequencers began to kick in. After a few bars, Bono instructs the soundcrew to "turn that crap off" and proceeded to run through the song without computerized accompanyment. Not really enjoying this song very much before, this performance revealed to me the core of the song and my appreciation of it rose dramatically.

Comments (Patrick Sullivan @ u2tours.com): Imagine, U2 spending a week in your hometown. Hard to decide what you would do. Would you take a week off work and spend every minute of every day trying to meet the only band that you have ever cared about? Or would you give them their space to prepare for what was going to go down as the greatest tour in rock history? I won’t bore you with the stories of friends getting arrested trying to sneak a peek from rooftops. Or stories of female friends sitting in a hotel bar waiting for a chance to meet any one of them (only to have Bono walk in and sit two feet behind them for a hour as they sat and said nothing). So let me break the week down. They came. They practiced. They were seen doing various things around the greater Hershey area. Thursday they announced that they wanted to have a rehearsal concert the next day. I sent my 60 something year old retired father to stand in line for tickets. They put on a show that will never be forgotten by any person who was lucky enough to be there. You can find many people in this town that will tell you that they were dragged by friends to this show and all they keep saying is "It's like a religious experience". I was lucky enough to see them two more times in the month to follow and all I can say is that the Hershey show was different. Not better, just different. Maybe it was the seats 10 feet from the stage. Maybe it was more relaxed. Or maybe it was the fact that for one week U2 turned our town into their town.
