Recording Equipment - History
Sony ECM 929 + WM-D6 master (T.W.) > CDM > EAC Secure > CEP 1.2 (removing tapeflipgaps and added fade-in, fade-out, see also "notes") > CDWAV (Track Index) > MKW > SHN > CDR
Notes taken from U2 MLK Trading Page (taken from Georg Nigsch site):
The
original CDs were too hot on the levels, I did "Clip Restoration" on
CEP 1.2 to make the Wavs 'listenable':
- "Restore Lightly Clipped" , Input attenuation: -4db
- "Overhead" : 1%
- "Minimum Runsize" : 1
Comments
Overall sound is quite loud and good, but also somewhat flat and muddy, as it lacks a bit more of crispness. This issue makes the sound to be a bit rough and harsh at some moments. I'd say this is because of equipment levels were set a bit high. Audience noise is audible, but not overwhelming, usually placed between songs. Anyway, note that minor clapping and talking can be heard near the taper in a few occasions. All instruments and vocals are clearly audible, featuring a nice mix. However, the muddy sound makes the recording to need a bit of overall cleaning. The show begins a little muffled, but during The Fly quality improves a bit, becoming a little clearer. There are very slight blips between some of the tracks, which are not very distracting.
To sum up, very good sound and clarity with instruments and vocals very audible, but there is a lack of crispness and overall cleanness, as it is a somewhat muddy and harsh in a few spots. Unfortunately, a tape flip occurs between Angel of Harlem and New York, New York, so the latter is missing the first part of the song. The phone call to the White House is also missing the first part, as it cuts in after Desire. Finally, a noticeable skip occurs at 01:14 in Love is Blindness.
