Recording Equipment - History
OKM II
Rock microphones + Sony TCD-D7 > DAT Master (@ 32khz) > Sony DTC-ZE700 (digital
transfer) > optical cable Terratec EWX 2496 >
Soundforge 9.0 > CDWave Editor > WAV > FLAC
Taper: Stadtfelder
Location: Recorded at the back of the front of stage area. There is hardly any crowd noise on the recording.
Additional notes (by the taper): I did some digital clones from my master in
1997 and 1998 but there has never been a transfer from this master so far. The
CD version which exists is taken from a digital clone or a higher generation of
a clone.
This was the best of the seven "Popmart"-shows which I saw in 1997. It was
raining all day (not heavily but steadily) and rain-concerts are the best! So
many and unexpected snippets like "In The Name Of The Father", "Summer Holiday",
"Broken English" and "Children Of The Revolution"! There were problems with
Edge's guitar on "Until The End Of The World" and with the start of "New Year's
Day". Disappointing was only the small number of fans (less than 20 000) which
joined the concert. "Popmart" was not a success in Germany.
Comments
Excellent audience source of the Mannheim gig, taped with OKM II rock microphones and a D7 DAT recorder. The output comes through pretty clear and very solid. In my opinion, this source sounds slightly better than the other audience source, taped with the same DAT recorder but OKM II classic microphones. Crowd noise is virtually non-existent.
It was raining, but the show is pretty good, with lots of snippets here and there. An impromptu cover of Children of the Revolution pops up at the end of Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me. The Edge experienced some problems on a couple of songs. Quoting the book U2-Live by Pimm Jal de la Parra (and Caroline van Ossten de Boer) published by Omnibus Press (2003): "The Edge has problems with his guitar during Until the End of the World and Bono just starts yelling 'Guitar! Guitar!' and then 'Edge! Edge! Edge! Edge!' over and over again during the climax of the song. Edge gets a little angry, takes out his frustration on some spare microphone stands on the left of the stage, knocking them over with his fist. The guitar problems add grit to the tune and when the keyboards go funny at the start of New Year's Day even that distortion contributes to the vibe. 'One, two, three, fuck!' Bono says, getting a little frustrated when the band miss their cue [...]. The Edge struggles with his wet, faulty keyboards. 'Eins, zwei, drei, vier...' Bono continues. 'Shake-a, shake-a, shake-a' Bono goes, encouraging his lead guitarist."
